Scoring: Stableford Scoring System – One of the most fun alternative golf formats is the Stableford scoring system. It was invented by Frank Stableford “to deter golfers from giving up on their round after just one or two bad holes.” It been in use, in one form or another, since 1898. Instead of counting your total number of strokes for a round of golf, you will convert your score on each hole into Stableford points.

Handicap: We’ll be using the Stableford scoring system with a handicap awarding points for net scores (your score after handicap adjustments) on each hole. Your course handicap dictates how many strokes you get on the hardest holes (based on the Stroke Index), effectively increasing the par for you on those holes, allowing high handicappers to score points on bogeys and pars, making it a fast, equitable format.

Handicap Examples:
– A 4 handicap gets one stroke on the 4 hardest holes.

– A 9 handicap gets one stroke on all holes.

– A 13 handicap get one stroke on all holes and an extra stroke on the four hardest holes.

SCORE RELATIVE TO PAR POINTS AWARDED

Three strokes under (Albatross) 6 points

Hole in One (Ace) 5 points

Two strokes under (Eagle) 4 points

One stroke under (Birdie) 3 points

Level Par 2 points

One stroke over (Bogey) 1 point

Two strokes or more over (Double Bogey or worse) 0 points

How it Works in Play:
– You play the hole, applying your handicap strokes.
– You earn points based on your net score (e.g., 2 points for net par)
– If you score two over your net par (double bogey or worse), you get zero points and can pick up your ball, speeding up play
– The player with the most points wins.
