Harr Fires a Season Best 23 as Gopher Killers Shatter the Record Books in Week 19

One week left in the 2026 Wednesday Fun League regular season. One more Wednesday at Manor Valley. One more chance to move a number, cement a legacy, and finish what started back in April on a cold Practice Week morning.

Before we get to the finale, let us talk about what happened on Week 19 — because what the Gopher Killers did on August 26th deserves to be remembered. And what John Harr did on the Front Nine at Manor Valley deserves its own paragraph.

🏆 Individual Leaderboard — Week 19

For the first time all season, Rich Babjak was not the story on a Gopher Killers night. That distinction belonged entirely to John Harr.

Playing off a 7 handicap, Harr carded a 38-stroke front nine — two over par — for 23 Stableford points. That is the highest individual score of the entire Week 19 field, and one of the finest individual rounds of the 2026 WFL season. Two over par on the Front Nine at Manor Valley with seven handicap strokes in your pocket produces a scoreline that is very hard to argue with. Harr was precise, consistent, and absolutely locked in from the first tee to the ninth green. On a night full of excellent golf, he was in a class of his own.

Four players tied for second at 19 points — and the variety of ways they got there is what makes this leaderboard so compelling. Matt Ankeny (Gopher Killers) shot 40 strokes (+4 vs par) off a 5 handicap for his second straight 19-point night, extending a strong late-season stretch. Rich Babjak (Gopher Killers) posted 43 strokes and 19 points, continuing the consistent excellence that has been his trademark all year. Randy Hobaugh (Par-Tee Animals) was one of the stories of the night — 38 strokes, two over par, 19 points off a 3 handicap. Essentially the same round as Harr at the top, just with a lighter handicap. And then there is Tim Townsend (Stableford Stars) — playing off just a 2 handicap, Townsend fired a 37-stroke round, one over par, for 19 Stableford points. One over par on the Front Nine off a 2 handicap. That is the single cleanest ball-striking round of the entire evening, arguably of the entire season, and it barely made a ripple because the field was so deep.

A massive group of players at 16 points — Adam Peters, Jake Kovac, Jim Colinear, John Gogets, Ray Maffit, and Vic Hensler — speaks to how competitive the field was from top to bottom on the penultimate night of the regular season.

The Gopher Killers just rewrote their own record book. A 77-point team night — the highest single-week team total of the entire 2026 WFL season — powered by John Harr (23), Matt Ankeny (19), Rich Babjak (19), and Jim Colinear (16). Todd Morgan posted 15 and did not count. Al Kabana posted 12 and did not count. Six players. Six double-digit rounds. Four of them enough to set a new season record. This is a team operating at an entirely different level right now, and they chose Week 19 — the penultimate night of the regular season — to do it.

The Stableford Stars had their best week in recent memory at 69 points, matching their own Period 2 best. Tim Townsend’s near-par masterclass (19 pts) led the way, with Tom Baldwin (18), John Gogets (16), and Vic Hensler (16) all contributing meaningfully. Jeff Hensler (15) and Chuck Tyke (11) were just outside the cut — another night of extraordinary depth from the Period 2 Champions.

The Par-Tee Animals posted a season-best 66 points — their finest team night of the entire year — with Randy Hobaugh’s 19-point gem leading the charge, John Mallick (17), Ray Maffit (16), and Chris Del Signore (14) all counting. Brilliant timing for a team fighting for every point in the Wildcard race. Four Play matched their own strong form at 61 points, and the Green Assassins! (57) and DragonballZ (54) rounded out a night where the entire field was pulling in the right direction.

Six skins found winners — Matt Ankeny on Hole 1 (1), Jeff Siegel on Hole 3 (2), and Tim Townsend cleaning up the three-skin carry-over on Hole 6 with a 3-stroke gross. Holes 7, 8, and 9 all tied with crowded leaderboards and produced no winner, meaning 3 skins carry over into Week 20, starting on Hole 10. The final Wednesday of the season begins with a pot already on the table. Somebody is going to earn a very nice send-off.

🎯 Season Skins Leaderboard — Through Week 19

The season skins race has a runaway leader — and it is not particularly close. Tim Townsend (Stableford Stars) has been the most lethal skin-winner in the 2026 WFL season, accumulating 32 skins to lead all players by a wide margin. Playing off a 2 handicap, Townsend wins skins the hard way — by making genuinely low gross scores — and he has done it consistently across all 19 weeks. Scratch-adjacent golf, week after week.

David Del Signore (Green Assassins!) sits second with 22 skins, and Jeff Siegel (Green Assassins!) is third with 21 — giving the Green Assassins! two of the top three skin winners in the league, which helps explain how they won Period 1 so convincingly. Matt Ankeny (Gopher Killers) is fourth at 16 skins, and Adam Peters (Four Play) rounds out the top five at 11.

🃏 Wildcard & Championship Picture — One Week to Decide Everything

Let us take stock of exactly where things stand heading into the final Wednesday of the 2026 WFL regular season.

The Green Assassins! are the Period 1 Champions. The Stableford Stars are the Period 2 Champions. Both have secured their WFL Championship berths. Period 3 is still being decided — and the Gopher Killers are the team to beat with 328 Period 3 points and counting.

But the Wildcard picture is where it gets truly fascinating. The 4th Championship berth — awarded to the highest-scoring eligible team across the full regular season — currently belongs to the Gopher Killers at 993 season points. Whether they win Period 3 or not, they are going to the WFL Championship. The question for everyone else is whether they can claim that Wildcard spot if the Killers clinch Period 3 outright and vacate the Wildcard for the next team in line.

Babjak and Ankeny Fire Up the Killers as WFL Late Season Hits Full Stride

Two weeks left in Period 3. The Back Nine at Manor Valley. Players who have been doing this every Wednesday since April and have absolutely no intention of coasting to the finish line. If Week 18 told us anything, it is that the Gopher Killers are the hottest team in the league right now, Rich Babjak is playing some of the best golf of his life, and Matt Ankeny quietly put together one of the cleanest rounds of the entire 2026 season.

The Late Season is living up to its name. Nobody is going through the motions out there.

🏆 Individual Leaderboard — Week 18

For the second time in three weeks, Rich Babjak (Gopher Killers) stood alone at the top of the leaderboard. Playing off an 8 handicap on the Back Nine, Babjak carded 20 Stableford points on a 42-stroke round — six over par with his net strokes working exactly the way they should. At this point in the season, the question is not whether Babjak will post a big number — it is how big. He has been the most consistent individual scorer in the WFL across all periods and he is showing no signs of slowing down as the season draws to a close.

Three players shared second place at 19 points, and each of them deserves individual recognition. Matt Ankeny (Gopher Killers) turned in what was arguably the finest single round of the evening — 40 strokes, four over par, off a 5 handicap on the Back Nine. That is elite ball-striking. To shoot 40 on the back at Manor Valley with only five net strokes in your pocket is a performance that would stand out in any format, on any night. John Mallick (Par-Tee Animals) matched the 19-point mark with a clean 44-stroke effort off a 9 handicap, and Ray Maffit (Par-Tee Animals) posted the exact same scorecard — 44 strokes, 9 handicap, 19 points. Two Par-Tee Animals, same score, same strokes, same handicap. The odds of that are remarkable.

Four players tied at 17 points to round out a stacked top of the leaderboard: David Del Signore (Green Assassins!, 41 strokes — the second-cleanest ball-striking round of the night), Jake Kovac (Four Play), and John Gogets (Stableford Stars) both at 45 strokes, and Bill Hensler (Four Play) posting 50 strokes off a 12 handicap — the handicap system working beautifully for Bill on the Back Nine.

The Gopher Killers are doing it again. For the second time this season they posted a 69-point team night — matching their Week 15 season best — and once again the depth of their roster is almost unfair. Babjak (20) and Ankeny (19) gave them a lethal 1-2 at the top, with Al Kabana (15) and Jim Colinear (15) filling out the counted four. The footnote that tells the real story: Todd Morgan posted 15 points and did not count, and John Harr posted 13 and did not count either. Six Gopher Killers, six double-digit rounds, four of them enough to win the night as a team. This is a roster operating at full throttle heading into the final two weeks of the period.

DragonballZ continue to be the team nobody is talking about enough — 61 points, their fourth strong week in a row, with Bryan Conn (16), Dwight Helfrich (16), and Larry Dzendzel (16) all tying as the team’s top contributors alongside Matt Simkovic (13). Three players at exactly 16 on the same night is an unusual kind of consistency, and it shows a roster that knows exactly what it is doing on the Back Nine.

The Green Assassins! and Stableford Stars finished in a dead lock at 60 points each — a remarkable coincidence given that they got there completely differently. David Del Signore’s 17 led the Assassins with Siegel (16), Morgan (14), and Ciorra (13) filling the counted four, while John Gogets’ 17 paced the Stars with Tom Baldwin (16), Chuck Tyke (14), and Jeff Hensler (13) all contributing. Two teams, same total, very different paths.

Four Play (56 pts) had Jake Kovac’s 17 lead the way, while the Par-Tee Animals — with only three scorers — posted 53 points entirely on the backs of Mallick (19), Maffit (19), and Hobaugh (15). The top two alone accounted for 38 of those 53 points. The Animals need more bodies on the tee sheet for these final two weeks.

📋 Handicap Updates — Effective Week 19

Ten players received updated WHS course handicaps effective Wednesday, August 26th. The headline belongs to Clay Karadus — down three strokes from 14 to 11, the biggest single adjustment in the field and recognition of the best stretch of golf he has played in his WFL career. Jake Kovac also earns a two-stroke reduction to 6, a reflection of his consistently strong Period 3 play. Six players saw reductions in total — a sign that Late Season scoring has been sharp across the board — while four players picked up an extra stroke, including Timmy “10” Townsend ticking from 1 to 2.

⛳ WFL Members Tee It Up for the Norwin Band

Before the final two Wednesdays of the 2026 season arrive, we want to take a moment to recognize something that happened the Sunday before Week 19 — and it says everything about the character of this league.

On Sunday, August 23rd, WFL members laced up their spikes and turned out to support the Norwin Band. Under a brilliant blue sky with perfect late-summer conditions — the kind of day that makes you wonder why you ever leave the course — our guys represented the Wednesday Fun League with the same competitive spirit and camaraderie they bring to Manor Valley every week.

The photos say it all. Matching shirts, golf clubs in hand, and the unmistakable energy of a group of guys who genuinely enjoy each other’s company on the course. The Norwin Knight statue standing guard at the first tee provided a fitting backdrop for what looks like it was a genuinely great day of golf for a great cause.

To everyone who played in the Norwin Band outing — well done for showing up, well done for supporting the community, and we hope the scorecard was kind to you. The WFL is proud to have members who give back beyond Wednesday nights. 👏

🃏 Wildcard Watch — The 4th Championship Berth

With two weeks remaining in Period 3, the WFL Championship picture is coming into sharp focus. The Green Assassins! claimed the Period 1 berth. The Stableford Stars secured Period 2. The Period 3 title is still being decided. And then there is the Wildcard — the fourth and final Championship berth, awarded to the highest-scoring eligible team across the full regular season.

Right now, it belongs to the Gopher Killers.

With 916 season points, the Killers lead the Wildcard standings as the top eligible team — and after a 69-point team night in Weeks 18, that lead only grew on Wednesday. If they win Period 3 outright, the Wildcard passes to the next team in line. If they do not, they hold the Wildcard themselves and still make the Championship. Either way, right now the Gopher Killers are going to the WFL Championship.

Four Play sit second in the Wildcard race at 835 points — 81 back of the Killers with two weeks to play. Mathematically alive, but they would need a historically dominant finish and a Killers collapse simultaneously. DragonballZ are third at 807 and Par-Tee Animals fourth at 796. Both teams need a miracle and a meltdown, in that order.

Gopher Killers Roar Into Period 3 as Siegel and Babjak Reminds Everyone Who They Are

Period 3 is underway, and the Wednesday Fun League wasted absolutely no time announcing itself. Twenty-nine players showed up for the Front Nine on a Wednesday evening, and what they produced was one of the most complete nights of team golf the 2026 season has seen. The Gopher Killers put on a clinic. Jeff Siegel delivered one of the finest individual rounds of the year. And somewhere in the Gopher Killers’ scoring pile, Rich Babjak posted 16 Stableford points and did not even make the top four. Let that sink in.

Welcome to Late Season. Nobody is taking a night off.

🏆 Individual Leaderboard — Week 15

For the second time in Period 3’s opening week, Jeff Siegel (Green Assassins!) reminded the field that when he is locked in, he is nearly untouchable. Playing off a 4 handicap from the Gold tees on the Front Nine, Siegel fired a 38-stroke round — just two over par — for 20 Stableford points. Three players tied for second at 18 points — and each of them got there a completely different way. Matt Ankeny (Gopher Killers) shot 41 from a 5 handicap, five over par and impressively tidy. Randy Hobaugh (Par-Tee Animals) was even cleaner — 39 strokes, three over par off a 3 handicap, a round that would have won almost any other week outright. And Larry Dzendzel (DragonballZ) continued his blazing Period 2 form into the new period, shooting 40 strokes off a 4 handicap — four over par, immaculate course management from tee to green.

A four-way tie at 17 points rounded out the top five and told the whole story of how loaded the field was on the night: Bill Hensler (Four Play), Bryan Conn (DragonballZ), Ray Maffit (Par-Tee Animals), and Todd Morgan (Gopher Killers). That is four different teams, four different styles, four 17-point rounds on the same nine holes. On any ordinary Wednesday, 17 points wins the night. Not this one.

The Gopher Killers produced the team performance of the week — and it might be one of the best collective nights any team has put together all season. All six Killers in the field scored in double figures. Their top four — Matt Ankeny (18), Todd Morgan (17), Jim Colinear (16), and John Harr (16) — combined for a dominant 67 points. The remarkable footnote: Rich Babjak posted 16 points and did not even make the counted four, and Al Kabana’s 15 did not either. Six players, six double-digit rounds. That is jaw-dropping team depth on a single Wednesday evening.

DragonballZ continue to look dangerous in Period 3, posting 64 points on Larry Dzendzel’s 18-point gem, Bryan Conn’s 17, Joe Smith’s 16, and Matt Simkovic’s 13. Four of their five-man roster in double figures and all four counted scores contributing meaningfully.

The Green Assassins! put up 61 points anchored by Siegel’s dominant 20, with Bob Ciorra (15), David Del Signore (14), and Al Powanda (12) all counted — Jerry Morgan’s 12 just missing the cut in a narrow call at the bottom. The Stableford Stars checked in at 56 points, steady as always behind Tim Townsend (16) and Tom Baldwin (15).

Four Play (54 pts) had Bill Hensler lead the way with 17, and the Par-Tee Animals posted 51 points with only three scorers on the night — Randy Hobaugh (18), Ray Maffit (17), and Chris Del Signore (16) all counting, every single one of them.

🔜 Looking Ahead — Week 16

Period 3 is off to a flying start and the standings race is wide open. The Gopher Killers served notice on Wednesday night that they are not here to finish fourth again. With Rich Babjak, Matt Ankeny, Todd Morgan, Jim Colinear, John Harr, and Al Kabana all contributing double-digit rounds in Week 15, this is a six-deep roster that can produce 67-point team nights — and in a top-4-counts format, that is an extremely dangerous team to chase down.

Week 16 brings the Back Nine back into rotation on Wednesday, August 5th. New handicaps in effect, full bags on the cart, and a Period 3 title still very much up for grabs. Do not miss it.

Stableford Stars Lead Period 2 as Chuck Tyke Puts the League on Notice

Period 2: Mid-Season Final Standings — Weeks 8–13 · Manor Valley Golf Course · Wednesday Fun League · 2026

Six weeks. Six chances to separate from the field. When the Wednesday Fun League teed it up for the final time in Period 2 on July 15th, the Stableford Stars had already done enough — but they went out and won Week 13 anyway, just to make a point. When the scorecards were tallied and the period was officially closed, one team had earned their place in the WFL Championship, and one player had put together one of the most dominant individual stretches the league has ever seen.

The Stableford Stars are the Period 2 Champions. And Chuck Tyke is the Period 2 MVP.

🏆 Final Period 2 Team Standings

The Stableford Stars close Period 2 as champions with 368 points — earning their berth in the WFL Championship. Their secret was simple and ruthless: they never had a bad week. Not one. Their floor across six weeks was 55 points, and they peaked at 68 in the finale. Week after week, Chuck Tyke, Jeff Hensler, Tim Townsend, and the rest of the Stars roster showed up and put numbers on the board. That kind of consistency does not happen by accident. It is the hallmark of a well-built team, and it was enough to hold off a Green Assassins! squad that was brilliant at the top but could not quite match the Stars’ depth across the full six weeks.

The Green Assassins! finish second at 365 points — just three back. They owned the opening three weeks of Mid-Season with back-to-back-to-back 66, 65, and 66-point efforts and Jerry Morgan’s two even-par masterclasses. In another period, against a different team, that would have been enough. Not this time. The Stars answered every challenge and simply would not be caught.

Four Play close third at 340 points — the feel-good story of Period 2. After finishing last in Period 1, Clay Karadus, Bill Hensler, and the Peters transformed this team into a genuine threat. Gopher Killers finish fourth at 337, powered by Rich Babjak’s continued excellence and a blistering finish — back-to-back 64-point team nights in Weeks 12 and 13 signal that the Killers are a team Period 3 will need to reckon with.

Week 8 — June 10 · Back Nine · 25 Players

Jerry Morgan (Green Assassins!) opened Period 2 with a statement — 20 Stableford points on an even-par 36-stroke round from the Gold tees with a handicap of just 2. Even par on the Back Nine at Manor Valley is not something that happens very often. Bob Ciorra returned to the scorecard with 18 points, giving the Assassins a lethal 1-2 that powered a 66-point team night. The field was tight behind them — Gopher Killers, Stableford Stars, and Par-Tee Animals all posted between 58 and 61.

Week 9 — June 17 · Front Nine · 33 Players

The biggest field of Mid-Season — 33 players — and Jeff Siegel rose to the moment with 19 points on a 40-stroke front nine. Welcome returns from Buzzy Peters, Chris Del Signore, and Jeff O’Neil swelled the Par-Tee Animals’ lineup. The Green Assassins! (65) and Stableford Stars (61) led the team charts.

Week 10 — June 24 · Back Nine · 26 Players

Jerry Morgan did it again — another 20 Stableford points, another even-par 36-stroke round from the Gold tees. Twice in three weeks. The man became Manor Valley folklore in Period 2. The Green Assassins! won the team night again at 66, while Joe Smith (DragonballZ) posted a career-high 17 points on just 42 strokes.

Week 11 — July 1 · Front Nine · 28 Players

The Gopher Killers roared to the top of the weekly team chart with 57 points. Rich Babjak returned to Period 1 MVP form with 18 points on 45 strokes. Joe Smith (DragonballZ) matched him — 18 points, 41 strokes, four over par with a 5 handicap. The Stableford Stars and Green Assassins! deadlocked at 55 apiece.

Week 12 — July 8 · Back Nine · 28 Players

The night Chuck Tyke put the league on notice. 23 Stableford points — the highest single-round score of the entire 2026 season — on a 44-stroke Back Nine with a 13 handicap. Eight net under par. It was a virtuoso performance that powered the Stableford Stars to 65 team points. Joe Smith followed with a career-best 21 points on just 38 strokes, and Clay Karadus posted 19 — Four Play’s best individual effort of the period.

Week 13 — July 15 · Front Nine · 27 Players · Period 2 Final

Tyke made it back-to-back dominant performances with 21 more points, and the Stableford Stars closed Period 2 with a season-best 68 team points — their finest team effort of the entire season, saved for the final night. Larry Dzendzel had the finest individual night of his season — 18 points on 38 strokes, two over par on the Front Nine from a 2 handicap. Adam Peters (17), Matt Ankeny (17), and Tim Townsend (17) all contributed stellar efforts. Four Play and the Gopher Killers tied at 64 each for second-best team on the closing night — both teams sending a clear message heading into Period 3.

🥇 Period 2 MVP — Chuck Tyke, Stableford Stars

It was never really a contest after Week 12. Chuck Tyke is the Period 2 MVP with 108 points across six weeks — an average of 18.0 per round and the two highest individual scores of the entire period in back-to-back weeks (23 and 21). He was the most dominant individual performer Mid-Season produced, and his 23-point masterclass in Week 12 stands as the single highest score of the entire 2026 WFL season.

Runner-up honours go to Jerry Morgan (Green Assassins!) at 94 points — built on two even-par rounds on the Back Nine that belong in WFL highlight reels forever. Jeff Hensler (Stableford Stars) rounds out the podium at 90 points, his quiet consistency an enormous contributor to the Stars’ championship run.

The biggest jump: Al Kabana up five strokes to a course handicap of 15. Fun Night #2 is Coming — Rotating Tees, a Blind Draw, and Two-Man Teams on July 22nd

Just when you thought the Wednesday Fun League had run out of ways to keep things interesting, President David Del Signore drops this on the group chat. Gentlemen — Fun Night #2 is here, and it is going to be a very different kind of Wednesday evening at Manor Valley.

Forget everything you know about your usual tee box. Next Wednesday night, the rulebook gets rewritten hole by hole.

🏌️ The Format — Rotating Tees

This is where it gets fun. Depending on which tees you normally play from, your starting position is going to rotate every hole on the Back Nine — and it repeats through the nine.

Gold Tee Players — here is your rotation starting on the 10th hole:

  • Holes 10, 13, 16 — White Tees ⬜
  • Holes 11, 14, 17 — Gold Tees 🟡
  • Holes 12, 15, 18 — Red Tees 🔴

White Tee Players — your rotation starting on the 10th hole:

  • Holes 10, 13, 16 — Blue Tees 🔵
  • Holes 11, 14, 17 — White Tees ⬜
  • Holes 12, 15, 18 — Gold Tees 🟡

So yes — Gold tee players will be hitting from the Reds on some holes and the Whites on others. White tee players will step up to the Golds on some holes and back to the Blues on others. Every hole is a different challenge. Every hole is a different distance. And every hole is an opportunity to either take advantage of a shorter tee or get absolutely humbled by a longer one.

Come prepared for all three. Or come prepared to adapt. Either works.

🎩 The Blind Draw — Two-Man Teams

After the round, the real drama begins.

There will be a blind draw to form two-man teams for the competition results — and here is the twist. The draw is split into two separate hats based on handicap:

  • Hat #1 — Handicaps 0 to 6
  • Hat #2 — Handicaps 7 and above

One name gets pulled from each hat. That is your two-man team. One low handicapper, one higher handicapper — every pairing balanced, every team competitive. No stacking. No loading up the low sticks together. Just the luck of the draw and whatever Stableford points you can muster on a night where nobody quite knows what tee box they are hitting from next.

It is still Stableford scoring, so play every hole like it counts — because it does. Your individual points from the round are what determine how your two-man team stacks up against the rest of the field. First and second place winners will be crowned on the night.

💡 Strategy Corner — How Do You Play This?

Glad you asked. Here is what Wednesday night is going to look like from a strategy standpoint.

Gold tee players — you are going to love the Red tee holes and you might not love the White tee holes quite as much. The shorter distances on the Reds are an opportunity to attack. The extra yardage on the Whites is a reminder that humility is a virtue. Pick your spots, manage your misses, and do not blow up on the longer holes chasing something you cannot reach.

White tee players — the Gold tee holes are your chance to be the long hitter in the group for once. Enjoy it. The Blue tee holes are the equalizer. Commit to a game plan off the tee and trust your scoring clubs from there.

For everyone: course management is everything on a night like this. You are going to hit shots from positions you have never hit from before. Know your distances from each tee, play to your strengths, keep the ball in play, and let the Stableford format do its job. A bogey still gets you a point. Take your medicine and move on.

🎯 The Blind Draw — Who Do You Want?

Here is the beautiful thing about a split-hat blind draw — strategy goes right out the window the moment the names get pulled. You cannot wish for a specific partner. You cannot engineer a good pairing. You just reach in, pull a name, and figure it out from there.

That said, here is the math: your two-man team’s combined Stableford points determine whether you finish first, second, or somewhere else. So the best thing you can do for your mystery partner is go out there and play the best round of your season. Show up, execute your game plan through three rotating tee boxes, bank as many points as you can, and let the chips — and the names — fall where they may.

Al Powanda Shoots the Lights Out as the WFL Survives Fun Night With Three Clubs and a Prayer

Three clubs. A putter. Nine holes of Manor Valley’s Front Nine. And approximately one hundred bad decisions made on the first tee box.

Welcome to the Wednesday Fun League’s first Fun Night of 2026 — an evening that rewarded creativity, exposed overconfidence, and proved once and for all that golf is harder than it looks even when you already knew that. Twenty-five players showed up with stripped-down bags and oversized ambitions, and the Front Nine had absolutely no mercy.

The results were glorious.

🌟 Top 3 Players of Fun Night

While the rest of the field was making peace with the limitations of a three-club arsenal, Al Powanda (Green Assassins!) apparently did not get the memo that this was supposed to be hard. Playing off a 7 handicap with whatever three clubs he trusted most, Powanda carded 20 Stableford points on a brilliant 41-stroke round — just five over par. That is the highest individual score of the week by a wide margin and one of the finest rounds of the entire season. With three clubs. On a Fun Night. Al Powanda does not care about your rules.

His Green Assassins! teammate David Del Signore claimed second at 17 points — and if you want to talk about the most impressive round of the evening from a pure ball-striking standpoint, David shot 40 strokes, the lowest gross total of anyone in the entire field on the night. Four over par with three clubs off a 3 handicap, no excuses, no hybrid to bail him out. Just golf. The Del Signore household clearly did not struggle with club selection this week.

Third place belonged to a three-way tie at 15 points: Joe Smith (DragonballZ), Bryan Conn (DragonballZ), and Kevin Powanda (Green Assassins!). Joe Smith’s 15 points on a tidy 44-stroke round showed exactly the kind of course management a limited bag demands. The Green Assassins! flexed their depth in a format designed to level the playing field — and somehow posted 63 team points, their second-best team total of the entire season. Al Powanda’s 20 led the way, David Del Signore added 17, Kevin Powanda chipped in 15, and Jeff Siegel contributed 11 for the counted top four. Jerry Morgan’s 9 just missed the cut but adds to an impressive full-team showing.

DragonballZ had their finest week of the season at 56 points — and it took a Fun Night format to bring it out of them. Joe Smith (15) and Bryan Conn (15) shared the team lead, Larry Dzendzel added 14, Matt Simkovic chipped in 12, and Dwight Helfrich rounded out the roster with 10. All five DragonballZ players in double figures. That is a complete performance on any night, let alone a three-club night.

Third place went to the Stableford Stars at 55 points — consistent and quietly excellent as always. Chuck Tyke (14), Tom Baldwin (14), and Jeff Hensler (14) all tied as the team’s top contributors, Tim Townsend added 13, and John Gogets posted 9 to round out a full five-man showing.

🤔 What Did Everyone Actually Bring?

The million-dollar question going into Fun Night was always club selection — and based on the scorecards, the field took a wide range of approaches.

The low-stroke performers — Del Signore (40), Powanda (41), Dzendzel (42), Hobaugh (42), and Townsend (42) — almost certainly had at least one versatile mid-iron that did heavy lifting across multiple situations. That kind of stroke economy suggests smart, simple selection: something reliable off the tee, a workhorse approach club, and something for around the greens. No frills, no gimmicks, just execution.

On the other end, the players north of 50 strokes — and there were several — likely either gambled with aggressive clubs that left them in trouble, or discovered the hard way that a fairway wood is a terrible chipping club. Both are valuable life lessons.

And then there is Clay Karadus — 58 strokes, 7 points, and a front nine that probably featured at least one moment of staring at his three clubs and wondering which one to use to chip out from underneath a tree. After the ball-in-the-tree incident on hole 13 last week, Clay’s relationship with Manor Valley’s timber is becoming a storyline all its own. We are rooting for you, Clay. Truly.

⏱️ A Word on Pace of Play

Alright, WFL. We need to have a little chat. Pull up a chair. Grab your post-round beverage. This will not take long — and neither should your round.

Pace of play matters. Everyone is out there to have a good time, but nobody’s good time includes standing on a tee box watching the group ahead deliberate endlessly over a pitch shot from 30 yards. Nine holes of Stableford golf should move. Here are the three golden rules:

Play ready golf. If it is safe and you are ready, hit. Do not wait for ceremonial order-of-play if the group is backed up. Ready golf is friendly golf.

Pick up when you are out of points. Once you cannot score on a hole — double bogey is your ceiling in Stableford — there is absolutely no reason to finish the hole. Pick it up, move to the next tee, and keep things rolling. Your group and the group behind you will both appreciate it.

Be ready when it is your turn. Club selected, yardage assessed, routine started. Nobody is expecting a Tour pro pre-shot ritual on a Wednesday evening at Manor Valley. Think on someone else’s shot, not your own.

A good pace of play means everyone finishes before dark, gets to the 19th Hole with time for a proper recap, and leaves in a good mood. That is the goal. Let us keep it moving. ⏩

🔜 Week 8 — Welcome to Period 2: Mid-Season

Wednesday, June 10th is Week 8 — the first night of Period 2: Mid-Season. The Fun Night clubs go back in the trunk, the full bag comes back out, and the competition ramps up with a fresh set of standings to chase.

Period 1 belonged to the Green Assassins! — they earned their Championship berth and carry the momentum of a dominant six-week run. But Period 2 is a clean slate for everyone else. The Gopher Killers, Stableford Stars, DragonballZ, Par-Tee Animals, and Four Play all have something to prove starting next Wednesday night.

New handicaps are in effect. The Back Nine awaits. The competition is fierce. And somewhere on the 13th fairway, there is still a tree that has absolutely no interest in giving Clay Karadus his ball back.

A Tree, Two Golf Balls, and One Very Unlucky Tee Shot on 13

Wednesday Fun League · Manor Valley Golf Course · Hole 13 · Back Nine

In the long and storied history of the Wednesday Fun League, players have found water, found bunkers, found the woods, and found ways to make a simple par-5 look extraordinarily complicated. But on a warm Wednesday evening at Manor Valley, Clay Karadus achieved something that belongs in an entirely different category of misfortune. He found a tree. Not the rough near a tree. Not the roots at the base of a tree. The inside of a tree.

The 13th hole — a generous par-5 from the back tees — handed Clay an opportunity off the tee. What happened next defied reasonable probability. His ball sailed off the club face, tracked toward the tree line, and disappeared into a narrow gap in the trunk of a massive old tree at the edge of the fairway. Not lodged against the bark. Not resting in a root. Fully inside the tree. Swallowed. Gone.

🌳 The Shot Heard Round the Fairway

Anyone who has played golf long enough has hit a tree. Most of us have watched the ball ricochet off the trunk and kick back into the rough, or bounce through the canopy and drop somewhere findable. That is normal golf. What Clay accomplished on 13 was something else entirely — a precision shot that threaded a golf ball through a gap in a split trunk that most people would struggle to post a letter through.

The gap in question runs vertically along the face of the tree, narrow enough that you would not give it a second glance walking past. The darkness inside the cavity makes it nearly invisible from the fairway. The ball found it anyway. Physics, geometry, and a healthy dose of bad luck aligned in perfect harmony to produce one of the great unintentional trick shots in WFL history.

The image does not lie. There it is — nestled deep in the shadowy crevice of an ancient trunk, unreachable, unplayable, and utterly unforgettable. If Clay had been trying to pull off that shot, he could not have done it in a hundred attempts.

⛳ And Then There Were Two

Here is where the story takes a turn that nobody saw coming.

As the group gathered around the tree to assess the situation — part investigation, part eulogy — someone looked closer into the cavity. And there, already residing in the hollow of that old tree, was a second golf ball.

Clay Karadus was not the first.

Somewhere out there is another WFL member — or perhaps a golfer from a completely different era — who walked up to that same tree, peered into that same gap, and had the exact same sinking feeling. Their ball is still in there. It has been in there long enough to become a permanent resident, a ghost of a round played and forgotten, preserved in the dark like a time capsule nobody asked for.

Two balls. One tree. An untold story and a very fresh one sitting side by side in the hollow of the 13th fairway.

📋 The Rules Situation

For those wondering about the ruling — a ball lodged inside a tree is an unplayable lie under Rule 19 of the Rules of Golf. The player has three options: stroke and distance back to the original spot, drop within two club lengths of where the ball entered the unplayable area (no closer to the hole), or drop on a line extending back from the hole through the point where the ball came to rest. All options come with a one-stroke penalty.

There is no relief without penalty for a ball inside a tree. The tree does not care about your handicap, your scorecard, or your feelings. It has been standing there for decades, it will be standing there long after we are all done playing, and it now holds two golf balls as proof of its patience.

🏌️ A Moment of Perspective

The great thing about golf — and the Wednesday Fun League in particular — is that the moments that last are rarely the birdies. Nobody is going to be talking about a straightforward par on 13 at the end of the season. But Clay Karadus threading a golf ball into the hollow of a centuries-old tree, only to discover a predecessor already waiting inside? That story gets told for years.

Golf does this. It humbles the skilled, punishes the unlucky, and occasionally produces something so absurd that the only appropriate response is to laugh, take your penalty stroke, and play on.

Somewhere inside that tree on the 13th fairway, two golf balls are waiting. If you find a third one in there this season, we will dedicate the entire post to whoever managed it.

Babjak Fires 21 to Claim MVP as Green Assassins! Win Period 1 Championship

Six weeks. Thirty-two players. One championship berth on the line. When the Wednesday Fun League gathered at Manor Valley for the final night of Period 1, the standings were tight, the stakes were real, and someone was going to have to step up and play the round of the season to tip the scales. That someone was Rich Babjak.

In the most decisive individual performance of the entire Period 1 campaign, Babjak carded a season-best 21 Stableford points to claim the Period 1 MVP award. But while Babjak owned the individual spotlight, it was the Green Assassins! who clinched what they had been chasing all season — a first-place finish in Period 1 and the league’s first Championship berth. Here is how it all unfolded.

🏆 Individual Leaderboard — Week 6

Rich Babjak (Gopher Killers) turned in the finest individual round of the 2026 season — 21 Stableford points on a 43-stroke Back Nine off a 10 handicap. Seven over par and somehow seven net under — that is the kind of scorecard that makes the rest of the field stop and take notice. It was Babjak’s sixth consecutive week in double figures, and it served as the perfect exclamation point on an MVP-calibre Period 1.

Second place was shared at 18 points between Jerry Morgan (Green Assassins!) and Tim Townsend (Stableford Stars). Morgan’s 39-stroke round off a 3 handicap was nothing short of surgical — three over par with barely any net help. Townsend matched him at 18 points from a 36-stroke round, again playing off scratch. Two of the cleanest rounds on the Back Nine all season, on the same night.

A trio tied at 17 points rounded out the top five: Al Powanda and Jeff Siegel (both Green Assassins!), and together with Morgan they gave the Assassins a dominant three-man punch that made the Period 1 result inevitable. Siegel’s 17 was his fifth consecutive week of 17 points or better — a streak of consistency that ranks among the most impressive of the season.

The Green Assassins! produced yet another dominant team showing — 65 points — with Jerry Morgan (18), Al Powanda (17), Jeff Siegel (17), and David Del Signore (13) all counting. That is four players with 13 or better on the night, which tells you everything about the depth that carried this team to the Period 1 title.

The Gopher Killers were right behind at 60 points, powered by Babjak’s historic 21 and a strong 16-point effort from Todd Morgan. The Stableford Stars posted 57 points — their consistency intact to the final bell, with Tim Townsend (18), Chuck Tyke (14), John Gogets (14), and Jeff Hensler (11) all contributing. The Stars finish the period without a single team score below 48. That is quiet, steady excellence.

One performance that demands mention even in a losing cause: Vic Hensler (Stableford Stars) posted just 4 points on a 57-stroke evening — his lowest round of the season by a wide margin after five consecutive weeks of 15 points or better. It happens to the best of them, and Vic has more than enough credit in the bank.

🏆 Final Period 1 Standings — Green Assassins! Claim Championship Berth

The Green Assassins! are the Period 1 champions with 337 points — a nine-point margin of victory that feels wider than it looks when you consider how close the race was at the midpoint. The Assassins were the most complete team of Period 1, producing the season’s highest single-week team score (69 in Week 5), the best Week 1 in the field, and closing with a 65-point flourish. They have earned their WFL Championship berth.

In a remarkable dead heat, the Gopher Killers and Stableford Stars tied for second at 328 points apiece. The Killers powered their way through the middle weeks on the back of Babjak’s individual brilliance; the Stars did it through week-in, week-out team consistency. Both will be back fighting for the title in Period 2.

DragonballZ finish fourth at 284, followed by the Par-Tee Animals (272) and Four Play (263). Both the Animals and Four Play had weeks where the full roster simply wasn’t there, and in a top-4 format, that is extremely costly.

🥇 Period 1 MVP — Rich Babjak, Gopher Killers

There was never really any doubt after Wednesday night. Rich Babjak is the Period 1 MVP with 105 Stableford points across six weeks — an average of 17.5 per round and not a single week below 13. He led the league in individual scoring from Week 1 and never relinquished that lead, capping the run with the best round anyone played all period.

Runner-up honours go to Jeff Siegel (Green Assassins!) at 99 points — a thoroughly deserving performance in his own right, built on five weeks of 17-or-better scoring. The gap between Babjak and Siegel was just two points entering the final week; Babjak’s 21 closed the door emphatically.

Green Assassins! Surge Back to the Top as Period 1 Comes Down to the Wire

If you were looking for a reason to show up next Wednesday, Week 5 just handed you several. The Green Assassins! stormed back to the top of the standings with a season-best team performance, the Gopher Killers and Stableford Stars refused to be shaken loose, and the Period 1 MVP race is now a two-man duel heading into a decisive final week. Wednesday, May 27th — the last night of Period 1 — cannot come soon enough.

🏆 Individual Leaderboard — Week 5

It was Jeff Siegel’s night. The Green Assassins! sharpshooter carded 19 Stableford points off just a 4 handicap on a 39-stroke front nine — three over par with almost no net assistance. That is a round that belongs in the highlight reel. It is Siegel’s second week-best performance of the season (he shared the top spot in Week 4 as well), and it could not have come at a better time for his team.

Three players tied for second at 18 points: Jeff Hensler (Stableford Stars), Al Powanda (Green Assassins!), and Rich Babjak (Gopher Killers). Hensler’s 18-point effort was his best round of the season and one of the Stableford Stars’ biggest individual contributions all year. Powanda, returning after missing Weeks 2 through 4, walked straight back onto the course and posted one of the top rounds in the field. And Babjak? He is simply relentless — his fourth consecutive round of 17 points or better cements his status as the most consistent individual scorer in the league.

Adam Peters (Four Play, 17 pts) was the week’s biggest individual story outside the top four — his second 17-point outing of the season and a major statement for a Four Play side that desperately needs it. David Del Signore (16), Jerry Morgan (16), Matt Ankeny (16), and Todd Morgan (16) round out a remarkable group of six players who all cracked 16 points on the same night.

The Green Assassins! put on the most dominant team performance of the 2026 season — 69 points from Jeff Siegel (19), Al Powanda (18), David Del Signore (16), and Jerry Morgan (16). All four of their counted scores were 16 or better. That is elite team depth, and it blew the competition away on the night.

The Gopher Killers answered with their own season-best effort at 63 points, powered by Babjak (18), Ankeny (16), Todd Morgan (16), and Colinear (13). Even with John Harr (13) and Al Kabana (6) falling below the cut line, the Killers’ top four was formidable.

The Stableford Stars posted 60 points — another strong week — with Jeff Hensler’s 18 leading the way. DragonballZ contributed a solid 52 points and welcomed newcomer Chuck Tyke to the scorecard, who made an immediate impression with 14 points on his debut. The Par-Tee Animals had a difficult week, managing only 36 points with just three scorers in the field — their lowest team total of the season.

📊 Overall Standings Through Week 5

The Green Assassins! reclaimed first place and in emphatic fashion — but the standings have never been tighter. The top three teams are separated by just four points heading into Week 6, and any one of them could end Period 1 as the champion.

The Green Assassins! lead at 272 points, driven by that explosive Week 5 performance. The Stableford Stars sit second at 269 — three points back — after five consecutive weeks of double-digit team contributions from every counted scorer. The Gopher Killers are right there in third at 268, just one point behind the Stars and four behind the lead. This is a genuine three-horse race with one week left in Period 1.

🏅 Period 1 MVP Race — One Week to Go

The Period 1 MVP award — presented to the player with the most Stableford points across Weeks 1 through 6 — is shaping up to be one of the best individual storylines of the early season. With five weeks in the books, here is where the race stands.

Rich Babjak (Gopher Killers) holds the lead at 84 points — an average of 16.8 per round — on the back of four consecutive outings of 17 points or better. The man has been the most consistent scorer in the league since Week 1 and enters Week 6 as the clear favourite for the award. Jeff Siegel (Green Assassins!) is right behind at 82 points after his season-best 19-pointer this week. Just two points separate them with one round left to play.

Further back but still in contention, Vic Hensler and David Del Signore are tied at 75 points apiece — mathematically alive but needing both a big personal round and for the leaders to stumble. Jeff Hensler (64 pts) has been climbing steadily and his 18-point Week 5 was his best of the year — but catching Babjak or Siegel from 18 back in one week is a tall ask.

📈 Who’s Trending

The biggest individual bouncebacks of the week belonged to Jerry Morgan (+9, from 7 to 16) and Matt Ankeny (+8, from 8 to 16) — both came roaring back after difficult Week 4 outings. Jeff Hensler (+5) and Todd Morgan (+5) also had strong upward moves. The only meaningful slide of the week was Ray Maffit, who dipped four points from his 15-point Week 4 performance to 11.

A warm welcome to Chuck Tyke, making his 2026 WFL debut with DragonballZ — 14 points right out of the gate is a very solid first impression. Al Powanda also returned after a four-week absence and reminded everyone exactly what he can do with an 18-point performance. Great to have you both out there.

Absent this week were Bill Hensler, Kevin Powanda, Chris Del Signore, Jeff O’Neil, and John Gogets — the Par-Tee Animals in particular could have used a full roster on a night when they could only count three scorers.

🏆 Week 6 — Period 1 Championship on the Line

Wednesday, May 27th is the last night of Period 1 — and there has never been more at stake on a single WFL Wednesday.

The team that finishes Period 1 in first place earns the first berth in the WFL Championship. With three points covering the top three teams, every player matters. Every hole matters. Every putt matters — and remember, there are no gimmes.

The Period 1 MVP goes to the individual with the most Stableford points across Weeks 1 through 6. Rich Babjak leads Jeff Siegel by just two points. Either man can win it, and both will be motivated to leave everything on the Back Nine next Wednesday.

Stars Reach the Summit as Babjak and Siegel Share the Spotlight in Week 4

Wednesday night at Manor Valley delivered everything a golf league could ask for — a tie at the top of the individual leaderboard, a dramatic standings shuffle, and a name change that turned a few heads. With last week’s rainout still fresh, scores from May 13th counted double — once for Week 2 and once for Week 4 — making every Stableford point worth its weight in gold. Twenty-nine members made sure they were there to collect.

When the dust settled, the Stableford Stars had climbed from third place all the way to the top of the overall standings, Rich Babjak once again led the Gopher Killers with a co-best round of the night, and the Green Assassins’ hopes of holding first place took a serious hit from their own bottom half. Here’s the full story.

🏆 Individual Leaderboard — Week 4

Wednesday night had a co-leader at the top — and it made for a great story. Rich Babjak (Gopher Killers) posted his second consecutive week-best performance, carding 17 points on a 47-stroke round off a 10 handicap on the Back Nine. The man is quietly becoming the most reliable individual scorer in the league. Sharing the top spot was Jeff Siegel (Green Assassins!), who was nothing short of surgical — 41 strokes and 17 points off just a 4 handicap. That is a seriously clean round.

One step back at 16 points was David Del Signore (Green Assassins!), who was equally impressive with a 40-stroke effort off a 2 handicap. The Green Assassins’ top two on the night were among the best rounds played all season — it’s just a shame their bottom two couldn’t keep pace.

Fourth and fifth place belonged to Ray Maffit (Par-Tee Animals, 15 pts) and Vic Hensler (Stableford Stars, 15 pts), both turning in consistent and team-critical rounds on the Back Nine. Maffit, in particular, continues to be one of the Par-Tee Animals’ most dependable contributors week after week.

The Stableford Stars edged the week’s team competition with 51 points, anchored by Vic Hensler (15), Jeff Hensler (13), Tim Townsend (12), and John Gogets (11). It’s the kind of spread-the-wealth performance that wins team titles — no single star, just four reliable contributors.

The Par-Tee Animals had their best team outing of the season at 50 points, with Ray Maffit (15) and Randy Hobaugh (13) leading the charge. The Animals are quietly climbing the standings and look more dangerous every week.

The Gopher Killers posted 47 points on the strength of Babjak’s 17 and Todd Morgan’s 11, while the newly renamed DragonballZ — formerly Team Dzendzel — contributed a solid 46 points with all four of their counted scorers in double figures.

Meanwhile, the Green Assassins! had the most lopsided team performance of the night. Siegel and Del Signore delivered two of the best rounds in the field, but Jerry Morgan (7) and Kevin Powanda (5) dragged the counted team total down to just 45 points — costing the Assassins dearly in the standings race.

📊 Overall Standings Through Week 4

The double-points week did exactly what everyone expected — it shuffled the deck. The Stableford Stars have surged to the top of the standings with 209 points, their 59-point Week 3 and back-to-back 51-point weeks proving they have the depth to win this thing. After starting the season in last place, the Stars now lead the league.

Breathing hard in second are the Gopher Killers at 205 points — just four back — with Rich Babjak’s Week 3 and Week 4 performances doing heavy lifting for the team. The Green Assassins! fall to third at 203, victims of their own inconsistency. They had the best Week 1 in the league by a comfortable margin, but back-to-back 45-point team weeks have allowed the field to catch up. Only six points now separate first from third.

The Par-Tee Animals are the surprise story of the week, jumping to fourth at 189 points on the strength of their best team performance of the season. DragonballZ (formerly Team Dzendzel — more on that below) sit fifth at 187, and Four Play round out the field at 176, still searching for the full roster turnout that would make them truly dangerous.

🐉 A Name Change Worth Noting

The team formerly known as Team Dzendzel is officially playing the rest of the 2026 season as DragonballZ. Whether this is a motivational rebrand, a tribute to anime culture, or simply the result of a well-placed bet — the results speak for themselves. DragonballZ finished fourth on the week and sit fifth overall. The name may be new, but the competition is the same.

📈 Who’s Trending

The biggest individual improvement from Week 3 to Week 4 belonged to David Del Signore, up five points to 16 with one of the cleanest rounds of the season. Ray Maffit also bounced back five points to 15 after a modest Week 3. On the other side, Jerry Morgan had the toughest slide of anyone in the field — dropping eight points from 15 to just 7 — and Matt Ankeny fell seven points. Both are capable of bouncing back quickly.

👋 Back in the Field

Adam Peters, Bill Hensler, and Randy Hobaugh all returned to the tee sheet this week after missing Week 3. Hobaugh, in particular, came back with a purpose — his 13-point effort was one of the top rounds on the Par-Tee Animals and a key piece of their best team week of the season. Good to have you back, gentlemen. Missing this week were Barry Smith and Dwight Helfrich — hope to see both back on the tee sheet soon.

📅 Looking Ahead

With four weeks in the books and the top three teams separated by just six points, the Stableford Stars hold first but nothing is safe this early in the season. Week 5 brings the Front Nine rotation back around and with a full field, any of the top three teams could find themselves on top by Wednesday evening. Don’t blink.
