Rich Babjak Fires the Shot of the Season as Gopher Killers Surge in Week 3

Wednesday, May 6, 2026 · Manor Valley Golf Course · Front Nine · Week 3

After last week’s rainout washed out what would have been Week 2, the Wednesday Fun League returned to the fairways of Manor Valley on a warm May evening hungry to make up for lost time. Twenty-eight members answered the call, and the Front Nine delivered exactly the kind of night that reminds everyone why they show up every Wednesday.

The headline? Rich Babjak fired the best individual round of the young season, the Gopher Killers quietly climbed into second place in the overall standings, and Tim Townsend reminded the field what scratch golf looks like. Here’s how it all unfolded.

🏆 Individual Leaderboard — Week 3

Rich Babjak (Gopher Killers) was the class of the field Wednesday evening, posting 19 Stableford points on a 45-stroke round off a 10 handicap. That’s the highest single-round score in the league this season, and a six-point improvement over his Week 1 showing. Babjak was dialed in from the jump, and the Gopher Killers are better for having him.

Close behind was Vic Hensler (Stableford Stars) with 17 points, carding a crisp 44 strokes off a 7 handicap — four points better than his opener and one of the more consistent ball-striking rounds of the evening.

Third place was a tie at 16 points between Barry Smith (Stableford Stars) and Tim Townsend (Stableford Stars). Smith turned in a steady 48-stroke round while Townsend — playing off scratch — fired a front nine 38, just two over par with zero handicap strokes in his pocket. In a Stableford format, that is about as clean as it gets.

Jerry Morgan (Green Assassins!) and Matt Ankeny (Gopher Killers) each posted 15 points to round out the top five. Morgan continues to be one of the most reliable performers in the entire field through two weeks of play.

🏅 Week 3 Team Scores

Only the top 4 scores per team count toward weekly totals.

The Stableford Stars owned Week 3 as a team, rolling up 59 points from their top four. Vic Hensler (17), Barry Smith (16), Tim Townsend (16), and Jeff Hensler (10) gave them three players in the top four of the entire field — that kind of depth is hard to match on any given Wednesday.

Right behind them were the Gopher Killers with a powerful 57 points. Babjak’s week-best 19 set the tone, with Matt Ankeny (15) and Todd Morgan (13) adding serious firepower and Jim Colinear (10) rounding out the four. With a full and suddenly loaded roster, the Killers are emerging as one of the most dangerous teams in the league.

The Green Assassins! checked in third at 51 points — consistent across all four contributors — while Team Dzendzel (43), Par-Tee Animals (40), and Four Play (33) round out the week. Four Play were missing several regulars and could only count three scorers on the night.

📊 Overall Standings Through Week 3

Through two completed weeks the Green Assassins! sit in first at 113 points, riding the strength of their dominant Week 1 performance — Jerry Morgan (17), David Del Signore (16), Jeff Siegel (15), and Al Powanda (14) gave them the top total in the field that night. But the lead is anything but comfortable.

Just three points back in second are the Gopher Killers at 110 points, surging after a strong Week 3 showing. And breathing down everyone’s neck in third are the Stableford Stars at 107 — only six points out of first after starting the season in last place. With the top three teams separated by just six points heading into a double-points week, the race for the top of the standings is very much on.

📈 Who’s Trending

The biggest mover of the week was Rich Babjak, up six points from Week 1. Chris Del Signore also bounced back with a five-point improvement, while Vic Hensler, Tim Townsend, Jake Kovac, and Barry Smith all moved in the right direction. On the flip side, Al Kabana had the toughest afternoon in the field — down seven points from his opener — and Larry Dzendzel slipped six. In Stableford golf, though, one good Wednesday fixes everything quickly.

👋 Welcome Back — and Good to Have You

Dwight Helfrich and John Mallick both made their 2026 debuts this week, contributing solid rounds for Team Dzendzel and Par-Tee Animals respectively. Good to see you out there, gentlemen. We also missed Adam Peters, Al Powanda, Bill Hensler, Bob Ciorra, Dale Bickerstaff, and Randy Hobaugh — hope to see you all back on the tee sheet soon.

📅 Next Week — Double the Points, Double the Stakes

Mark your calendars and do not be late: Wednesday, May 13th is the most important night of the early season. Due to last week’s rainout, scores from May 13th will count for both Week 2 and Week 4 — meaning the top four scores from every team get counted twice in the standings. With only six points separating first from third, one strong outing could completely flip the leaderboard. This is not the week to leave your clubs in the car.

See everyone on the first tee. ⛳
